The MidAtlantic Chinook Club held its sixth event, a Picnic/Pulling Seminar/Trail Run in Sloatsburg, NY on November 1. The weather was perfect- almost a bit warm for pulling, but this meant that there was time to work the dogs, and more time to sit and talk dogs, and enjoy the plentiful food! Maria Sommer lives nearby and had done a great job scoping out the location, which was a lovely park and picnic pavilion. She brought GreatMountain Willowemoc four month old puppy Callicoon X Schuyler, who were reunited with sibling Callicoon X Takoda and her dad Kris Krajweski. The puppies made great friends with all of the children that happened past!
Jerry and Katherine Kloby brought Chinook-for-a-day Autumn Ridge Winnie to supervise, and Granite Hill X Uma to provide pulling 'muscle', while Kim, Steve, and Ryan Kramer had GreatMountain X Kusko Kwim, GreatMountain Atlin Moekaneu, and GreatMountain X Ningo Saba for the pulling. Saba was happy to see her brother, GreatMountain X Cutler, and we were happy to see Lee Ann Simonson, his mom! Karen Hinchy had GreatMountain Passaconaway and GreatMountain Lyric Tikaani along for some demos.

Kusko, digging in
The morning started off with Maria and Karen running through a variety of sledding, bike-joring, scootering, and cani-cross equipment. No one had a really good explanation about why Karen has two dogs and 9 harnesses! After a flurry of sizing the dogs, the first round of enthusiastic pullers hooked up to drag sled, motorcycle tire, or camper tire for the two-dog teams. All of the dogs worked well in harness and had a good experience - puppies Takoda and Schuyler both dug in and showed they inherited their parents drive. Kusko and Atlin, and Conaway and Tikaani both turned in impressive performances working together as teams. Uma proved not only could she pull a drag sled, but then took off with Jerry on the scooter across the open field, while Cutler held the title for zen dog, pulling like a demon one minute, and relaxing calmly the next.

Passaconaway and Tikaani
After the first round of exercise, the people got to sit and enjoy some pizza and lots of goodies- Kim even had a cake with the MACC logo in icing! As is usual, there was more than enough food, and great conversation. After lunch, and some bike and scootering trips around the field, it was time to pack up. While some took the opportunity to head out, having had a lovely meal, good company, and some outdoor exercise, others drove a bit down the road to the trailhead. A 1 mile, roughly circular trail provided the perfect opportunity to end the day on a high note! Three bike-joring teams followed by two cani-cross teams took off down the trail, practicing perfect "On-Bys" and running with steadiness and determination. It was a really impressive sight, and the perfect end to a great day!
