Events Maria Sommer, our MACC publicity chair, was gracious enough to not only let us come and play with her one week old puppies, but to host a litter evaluation seminar at her house. Jessica Maurer came down from Maine to brief the group on the breed standard, show proper handling techniques for evaluating puppies, and also how to evaluate the puppies against the standard. See the full event report below. In typical MACC fashion, everyone had a great time and there was plenty of food for all ! For more information on MACC events, contact: events@midatlanticchinooks.org
On
November 11th, 2006, MACC hosted a litter evaluation seminar
presented by long-time Chinook breeder, owner and exhibitor, Jessica
Maurer of GreatMountain Chinooks. The willing subjects (okay, they
didn’t have much say in the matter) were the Halloween Litter of Callicoon
Chinooks. The event was held at the home of Maria and Chuck Sommer,
in Sloatsburg NY. Nine breeders or potential breeders were present and
shared an interesting morning catching up, swapping stories and learning
to evaluate the structure of newborn puppies. Oh, and of course, because
it was a Chinook event there was great food and plenty of it.
After an initial round of coffee, bagels and puppy snuggling, Jess Maurer started the presentation with an in depth look at the UKC standard for Chinooks, focusing especially on points related to structure and workability. Then, she explained that the evaluation tool participants were about to see had been developed by Bill Burrell over the last 40 years, and has been used extensively to evaluate litters of Chinooks and other working dogs with great success. Participants then were taken through the evaluation process using real puppies! Experienced puppy holders Karen Hinchy and Kim Kramer demonstrated the various techniques and contortions (for the holders, not the puppies!) that allow the evaluator to get an objective look at how each puppy is “put together”, then participants were able to try their hands at it, literally. Some of the puppies were more cooperative than others, but everyone had a great time and learned a lot about what to look for in a strong, efficient sled dog.
A special thanks to Jessica Maurer for her expertise and willingness to share it freely, to Maria and Chuck Sommer for hosting, and to Kim Kramer and Karen Hinchy for all the planning, food, and help running the event. Most of all, thanks to CH ‘PR’ Pippa Passes Callicoon and GreatMountain X Schoodic Mist for producing such a great litter. Calli gets extra mention for allowing up to a dozen strangers to invade her den and take over her puppies, all without batting an eyelash. She took the opportunity to take a long nap in the middle of the living room floor.
